You can't seem to
get away from Gerry Anderson. There's a new book by Chris Bentley, The
Complete Gerry Anderson, and his Thunderbirds, Stingray,
Supercar,
Space: 1999 and Fireball XL5 supermarionation programmes
and some even rarer examples of his work are being screened at the Barbican,
London, on June 7 and 8, 2003. To put you in the mood you enjoy An
Evening with Gerry Anderson on June 5, 2003, which is also hosted by
the Barbican.
Given the detail of Anderson's creations it is not surprising that a PC strategy game based on his Captain Scarlet, television series has been developed. The game takes you to the year 2068 and the Mysterons are waging a war of nerves against Earth, issuing cryptic warnings before using their powers of retro-metabolism to control people and carry out their threats. Earth's only defence is Spectrum, a world security organisation now focused solely on defeating the Mysteron menace. Captain Scarlet: Retaliation is a real time tactical strategy game that puts you in control of a team of up to six Spectrum Agents, each with their own unique abilities, as they attempt to stop the Mysterons from carrying out their threats. The title combines intensely addictive game play with stunning graphics and the rich background of the television series to create a compelling game that will appeal to a wide range of gamers. Key Features Fourteen graphically stunning levels set across a wide range of different environments. Five completely new 'episodes' recreate the look and feel of the series. Control six Spectrum Agents, each with their own unique abilities including diving, rock climbing and lock picking. Choose from a range of tools to complete your objectives. Everything from Captain Blue's sniper rifle to Mysteron detectors to remotely controlled robots. Combat a variety of Mysteron Agents including tomb robbers, jungle rebels and the elusive Captain Black. Control the classic Captain Scarlet vehicles, the Angel Interceptor, Spectrum Saloon Car and of course the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle. Call in air-strikes, defuse nuclear bombs, rescue a downed Angel pilot and much more. Fully featured particle effects system that brings the levels to life. Three levels of difficulty to suit players of all ages and abilities. The game has been developed by Batfish, and the Digital Workshop will be releasing it in the UK in the Summer of 2003. This is now delayed until 14 November 2003, but the Producer’s Edition is available to order now! This will be shipped prior to the game’s release in November. A limited run of 500 Producer’s Editions will be made and will consist of the Captain Scarlet: Retaliation CD in a metal Spectrum CD film case, a numbered Producer’s Edition box, a Captain Scarlet commemorative stamp cover signed by Gerry Anderson, creator of the series, and a set of design development drawings from the creation of the game, signed by the artist. Owners of the Producer’s Edition will also be named in the credits on the game itself, providing a unique provenance for this collector’s item. And a playable demo of the game will be available prior to release for all Producer’s Edition owners. The Producer’s Edition will only be on sale until 24 October 24, priced at £39.95.
