There will only ever
be one Quint – the hunter who has a unique bond with his prey. Many have
tried emulate the great Robert Shaw. Most of them have failed. Painfully.
THE ARCHETYPE ROBERT SHAW as QUINT (Jaws,1975) Salty, drunk, craggy, delivering every line through gritted teeth. Talks about the USS Indianapolis. Has a personal vendetta against sharks. Grudgingly respects the great white when one of them chomps him in half. THE PRETENDERS MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY as DENTON VAN ZAN (Reign of Fire, 2002) Craggy, scornful and delivers every line like he has memorized Quint’s mannerisms since birth. Has a personal vendetta against dragons. Believes jumping of a building with only an axe will help him beat his scaly foe. Dragon evens out the odds and pulverizes him. MICHAEL DOUGLAS as CHARLES REMINGTON (The Ghost and the Darkness, 1996) Constant scowl, slightly mad (maybe because he had to work with Val Kilmer) and has a thing about killing lions. GREGORY PECK as CAPTAIN AHAB (Moby Dick, 1956 ) Controversial inclusion but Quint would have bitten off his wooden leg and used it to floss Moby Dick’s teeth. Or drunkenly mistaken it for spoons. OTHER WORTHY MENTIONS FOR QUINT-LIKE BEHAVIOUR Fred Williamson as Frost in From
Dusk till Dawn (1996), Captain McAllister from The Simpsons
and Jon Voight as Paul Sarone in Anaconda (1997)
