It’s clear from the outset that 2 Fast 2 Furious is a quick paced, high action movie, enhanced with cine-graphics. It’s also frighteningly obvious that this movie is identical to it’s prequel The Fast and The Furious, delving little further than the wonders of it’s superficial looks. Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) returns as good cop turned bad. Now an active participant in street race hustling with Taj, US hip hop artist Ludacris. Teaming up with Roman Pearce (US soul singer and international model Tyrese), 2 Fast 2 Furious begins an uncannily familiar plot.
Baby blue eyes, O’Connor and the muscle of the movie, Pearce (Vin Diesel declined to star in this 'much awaited’ sequel) reluctantly work together, racing across the Miami freeways in order to outwit a murdering drug dealer and in return have their criminal records cleared. There are literally only a couple of elements in the story (I loath to call it a plot!) that could not be foreseen from the start; namely a cunning car scrabble towards the end of the movie. The finale to a funny and sometimes tense pursuit - the movies' ‘plot’ highlight! However, overall this movie is predictable with its compulsory love interests, friendly feuds and Scooby Doo style bad guys. Not to mention an embarrassing rehash of its predecessor.
Leaving few memorable moments in mind which relate to the actual plot, 2 Fast 2 Furious makes an excellent advertorial. Even after immediately leaving the cinema, purely superficial visuals are left in mind; the turbo speed Mitsubishi, Toyota and Honda racing cars (to name a few!) and the model type good looking actors, but not the movie itself. Generally the plot is the purpose and lure toward a movie. So it’s a miracle that The Fast and The Furious was the mediocre success it was in 2001, probably due to being the first of it’s kind. However any proceeding movies which use a plot purely as linkage to a montage of cars and posers driving them, cannot continue to be a success and satisfy it’s viewers. If you want a movie for your eyes to flicker at the screen then check it out! It is very fast, but you’ll be furious if you pay to see this at the cinema! Donna Goodwin
