This hit procedural TV series combines crime-solving
twists with wry humour that celebrates mind over matter.
In the third season, Red John strikes into the heart of
the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Ever since
the elusive serial killer murdered Patrick Jane's family,
the CBI consultant and former sham-psychic has become
obsessed with finding the man who destroyed his life. But
after a homicide suspect is set ablaze in his jail cell
and a CBI agent is later framed as an informant for Red
John, Patrick realizes his longtime adversary is much
closer than he imagined. In settings from gold country to
the racetrack to a martial-arts cage brawl, the
unconventional Patrick Jane uses his unique skills of
observation and psychological manipulation to bypass the
system and solve the toughest cases.
The Mentalist was created by Bruno Heller (HBO's Emmy
Award-winning Rome), who executive produces along with
Chris Long (Criminal Minds), Tom Szentgyorgi (Lie to Me),
Ashley Gable (Crossing Jordan) and Daniel Cerone (Dexter).
The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television.
The super-suave protagonist, played by Golden Globe
nominee Simon Baker (The Guardian, The Devil Wears Prada),
has a remarkable track record for pinpointing the ‘perp’
by using his razor sharp skills of psychological
observation and body language analysis. Jane is notorious
for his blatant lack of protocol and his suspicious past
as a quasi-famous psychic. No-nonsense CBI senior agent
Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney - Prison Break, House) takes
the heat from her boss, Chief Madeleine Hightower
(Aunjanue Ellis – The Help), for Jane’s theatrics, but
with a daily job load ranging from homicide to kidnapping,
they must ultimately work together in order to crack the
complex cases.
The CBI team includes agents Kimball Cho (Tim Kang – The
Office, Rambo), Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman – Midsummer
Murders, Troy), and relative newcomer Grace Van Pelt
(Amanda Righetti – Friday the 13th, Captain America).
Though they know Jane is a loose cannon, they are often
charmed by his uncanny ability to bring the guilty to
justice.

The information above is from official press releases, but
I can add that it is an excellent TV series that features
Patrick Jane as a modern-day version of Sherlock Holmes.
The novelty of the show is that he can deduct the nature
of the crime scene from his psychological skills and as a
freelancer he has the chance to go off at tangents whilst
the police go for the obvious suspects. The Red John
storyline gives a running thread to the show, though it
often gets hidden away or forgotten in many episodes. At
its best it is an enjoyable detective series worth
checking out if you've never come across it before.
